Charminster

Charminster is a village and civil parish in Dorset, England, situated on the River Cerne and approximately 1 mile north of Dorchester. It is a picturesque village known for its historical significance and scenic beauty.

Historical Significance:

  • St Mary’s Church: The village’s most notable historical feature is St. Mary’s Church, which dates back to the 12th century. The church has distinctive architectural elements and contains several interesting memorials.
  • Wolfeton House: Located on the outskirts of Charminster, this 16th-century manor house is a significant historical landmark. It has a rich history and features impressive Elizabethan architecture.

  • Community Hall: Charminster also has a community hall for sports, events and parties, this is managed by the Parish Council for community benefit

  • Allotments: Allotments are located at the new Charminster Farm development. These are managed by the Allotment Association.

Charlton Down

Charlton Down is a village in Dorset, England, situated around 3 miles north of Dorchester. It is a relatively new village, developed on the site of the former Herrison Hospital.

  • Herrison Hospital: The village was developed on the site of this former psychiatric hospital. Many of the hospital buildings have been converted into residential properties, retaining much of their historical architecture.
